A Prince Albert church group is no longer on the hook for a $14,000 fine it received from government authorities in October, after allegedly violating public health orders and provincial COVID-19 guidelines.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, Public Prosecutions assesses each case individually to determine whether it meets the prosecution standard, and may only proceed with a case where they have a reasonable likelihood of conviction and where it is in the public interest to do so.
“The standard was not met in this case, as the evidence did not provide a reasonable likelihood of conviction,” the Ministry wrote in an email to paNOW. ....

175 cases and counting: Why a COVID-19 outbreak linked to a Sask. church event in October is still considered active

SASKATOON
Nearly four months after a COVID-19 outbreak was first declared in connection to a series of revival meetings in Prince Albert, contact tracers are still learning of new coronavirus cases linked to the events.
According to data provided by Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), three generations of cases can be traced to Full Gospel Outreach Centre.
The outbreak was initially declared on Oct. 6, after six coronavirus cases were linked to a series of events held from Sept. 14 to Oct. 4.
As of Dec. 31, 86 first and second-generation cases had been attributed to the events, spread throughout 17 communities.
Now, according to the SHA, a total of 175 cases have been linked to the meetings. ....

P.A. church group to contest big COVID fine

A Prince Albert church will contest in court the large fine it received from government authorities in October for violating public health orders and provincial COVID-19 guidelines.
The Alberta lawyer who will represent Full Gospel Outreach says religious groups and street churches in particular have been targeted by authorities during the pandemic and the case will revolve, in part, around the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Meanwhile, the church’s pastor says the government has been “unbalanced” in its enforcement of the laws and argues health officials don’t understand the importance of spiritual gatherings.
The church’s legal costs will be paid for by the far-right political online media outlet Rebel News, which has run a crowdfunding campaign to give legal assistance to those who, as they say, “have received a lockdown ticket.” ....
