By Justin Hendry on May 31, 2021 12:53PM Six-month backing to ensure long-term viability. UNSW will provide a six-month funding lifeline to the research team responsible for developing the secure embedded L4 (seL4) microkernel after the group was disbanded by CSIRO’s Data61. TS is one of several groups impacted by a wider Data61 restructure that will impact up to 70 staff across software computation systems, cyber physical systems and analytics and decision sciences. The new funding from UNSW’s School of Computer Science and Engineering will see continued research and development on seL4 – the first operating system kernel said to be mathematically proven to be secure. ....
By Justin Hendry on May 21, 2021 1:09PM Derek Winter After more than five years. The University of Sydney’s chief information security officer Derek Winter has made the jump to the University of NSW after more than five years at the sandstone university. Winter joined UNSW as its new permanent CISO and director of cyber security earlier this month, ending an almost two-year search for a replacement. The university delayed its original search last year due to the pandemic, with former CISO Cooper opting to stay on until September 2020. It restarted the search in January, with plans to stem what has been a revolving door of CISO’s over the last five years. ....
Ditch NAPLAN Tests For System That Puts Students First: Report The Gonski Institute for Education is calling for the government to ditch NAPLAN tests rather than reform them and replace the standardized exams with tests that put the interest of students first. In its new report, ‘Putting Students First,’ the Gonski Institute has proposed new sample-based testing of students that “builds trust and capacity,” moving away from NAPLAN’s census approach that has a “strong focus on accountability.” The main proposal is to replace the current literacy and numeracy tests in years 3, 5, 7, and 9 with sample-based assessments in years 4, 6, 8, and 10 while complemented with teacher-led assessments in schools. ....

Date Time Secret genetic switch in zebrafish key to heart regeneration Scientists have discovered a critical new gene in zebrafish that helps them repair damaged heart muscle. Researchers at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI) and UNSW Sydney have identified a genetic switch in zebrafish that turns on cells, allowing them to divide and multiply after a heart attack and resulting in the complete regeneration and healing of damaged heart muscle in these fish. It’s already known that zebrafish can heal their own hearts, but how they performed this incredible feat remained unknown until now. In research published this month in Science, the team drilled down into a critical gene known as Klf1 that previously had only been identified in red blood cells. For the first time they discovered it played a vital role in healing damaged hearts. ....
