Million-dollar dumps: Boating club struggles to maintain heritage clubhouse due to 1923 law

David White stuff.co.nz The Takapuna Boating Club is seeking a change of wording in the legislation that stipulates how it may use its Bayswater clubhouse, which was gifted to the club by an Act of Parliament in 1923 Locals on Auckland’s North Shore have long wondered why a grand, three-storey heritage building visible from the Harbour Bridge has sat dilapidated for years. Stuff has previously reported on Auckland’s mysterious million-dollar dumps, including several which are publicly owned. In part three of Caroline Williams’ investigation, she reveals the legislation binding what can – and can’t – be done with the Bayswater clubhouse.

Local board delivering on accessible public facilities

Public facilities in the Devonport-Takapuna Local area are becoming more accessible for people with disabilities. Work on a new toilet and changing facility at Gould Reserve at Takapuna Beach is scheduled to get underway this winter, with one of the special features being a Changing Places Room space. “This wonderful new world-class amenity will include toilets, showers and changing facilities as well as special chair hoist in the Changing Places Room space so people with severe disability and mobility challenges can wash and change more easily,” says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Aidan Bennett. The additional features have been enabled through the support of generous locals Jackie and Chris Reeve, who were the key funders and driving forces behind the fabulous destination playground nearby.

New residential parking zone confirmed for Takapuna

Source: Auckland Council Takapuna will soon have a new residential parking zone – providing greater parking availability and flexibility for residents and visitors. The zone will mean anyone can park for up to two hours, with exemptions for residents who can purchase permits to park anytime. Auckland Transport (AT) asked for public feedback on the proposal in October last year and received 525 responses. After listening to feedback, AT reduced the size of the zone to cover the streets closest to the town centre where it has been hardest to find a car park. The new amended parking zone will cover Bracken Avenue, Tennyson Avenue, Sanders Avenue and Park Avenue. It will also cover part of Burns Avenue, Huron Street, Northcroft Street and Byron Avenue.

Work about to start on new facilities at Milford Reserve

Source: Auckland Council Showering, changing and making a pit stop at Milford Reserve is going to get easier with work about to kick off on new toilet and changing room facilities at the park. Work is expected to start in mid-April on the project, starting with removal of the existing building and replacing it with a more modern facility that was designed in response to community feedback several years ago. “The old, traditional brick building has served users very well for a long time, but has reached the end of its life and was scheduled to be renewed,” says Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Aidan Bennett.
