Sometimes he told dispatchers he needed to talk about his mental health, other times his words didn’t make much sense. He said he didn’t need police officers to check on him, but he kept calling back anyway. Calls like these to local police departments are increasingly common in Maine and across the country, prompting public safety officials to re-examine how they’re interacting with people with mental illness and to hire mental health clinicians better equipped to work with people in crisis. ....
South Bend Tribune SOUTH BEND As the group Faith In Indiana pushes for a mobile response unit to give South Bend area police forces an alternative to jailing those with mental illness and substance abuse problems, both activists and officials cite Eugene, Oregon as a community that s getting it right. February 1, 2021 Santa Rosa Police are taking steps to answer nonviolent mental health calls. The Press Democrat reports that the SRPD has signed a contract with the Oregon-based non-profit White Bird Clinic to help implement a program that would send mental health workers rather than police to help in nonviolent calls. The White Bird Clinic has set up the “Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets” unit, CAHOOTS for short, for answering these calls in Eugene, Oregon dating back to 1989.
