Why self-medication is on the rise Wednesday April 28 2021 A woman prepares to take medication. Under and over doses are common during self-medication. PHOTO/ABUBAKER LUBOWA Summary Advertisement In the past, self-medication was common among the rural population, who lived far away from health centres. However, today any person who feels unwell walks into a pharmacy or drug shop to buy drugs, some of which require doctors’ prescription. According to medical experts, self-medication results in under or overdose, especially among children and expectant mothers. In 2010, the National Drug Authority (NDA) estimated that eight in every 10 people self-medicate or buy drugs over the counter. NDA attributes this to the increased number of pharmacies and drug shops, expensive treatment from clinics and long distances to health facilities. ....
COVID: HE body orders colleges to reduce student numbers Daily Monitor. Arthur Babu Muguzi, the NCHE director of finance, planning and administration, said many private institutions rushed to re-open to all students instead of only finalists, yet they don’t have enough facilities and capacity to meet standard operating procedures. This, he said, has put lives of students and staff at risk of contracting COVID-19. This comes after a recent Daily Monitor survey revealed that several private schools countrywide have ignored the reporting dates set by the Ministry of Education and allowed all learners to resume normal classes. Government had asked the schools to re-open in a staggered manner in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
Undergraduate development studies degree phased out Development studies, a subject field in which Uganda’s Makerere University has just been ranked 45th globally, will cease to exist as a single undergraduate degree course from the 2021-22 academic year as part of a programme rationalisation process. The degree, offered in the college of humanities and social sciences, has been ranked in the top 50 globally in the 2021 QS World University subject rankings, released in March. But Makerere will remove it from the list of choices for undergraduate programmes as part of 18 programmes that will be phased out. According to Makerere University, the development studies degree will be ‘scattered’ and its content integrated into other courses because it is a cross-cutting field of study and it will be an elective option that students can choose at all levels of their studies. ....
Daily Monitor Wednesday February 24 2021 The fight against Covid-19 is a multi-pronged process. However, the buzz has focused on vaccines forgetting that treatment is important too. Vaccines are a preventive measure and, therefore, not designed for everyone. There is still a need for treatment for those with severe and light symptoms of Covid-19. For example, patients in intensive care units (ICU) need medication to keep their lungs from getting damaged, those with minor symptoms need medication to safely manage the illness. Uganda recently launched a clinical trial for Covid-19 treatment. The World Health Organisation defines clinical trials as a type of research that studies new tests and treatments and evaluates their effects on human health outcomes. ....
