The military regime has set up temporary courts inside prisons in Yangon, Mandalay, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions to hear the cases of political prisoners.
So far, temporary courts have been set up in Obo Prison in Mandalay, Insein Prison in Yangon, Pyay Prison in Bago and Hinthada and Pathein prisons in Ayeyarwady Region.
“A court was set up inside Hinthada Prison at the end of March to hear political cases. Another court was opened in Pathein Prison on Wednesday. The court consists only of a civilian judge and a law officer,” a source close to the Ayeyarwady Region judicial department told The Irrawaddy. ....

Tensions are rising in Myanmar after military spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun hinted at the possibility of a coup, should the military’s claims of electoral fraud go unaddressed. Particular attention has been paid to his comment on Tuesday that “The military will abide by existing laws including the Constitution. Yangon Bagan residents who are dependent on tourism have called for the site to be reopened to visitors with COVID-19 precautions.
They said they would ask the Mandalay regional government to reopen pagodas and temples in Bagan and allow tourist businesses to trade by February as they are struggling. They also sent a petition to Mandalay Region chief minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung on Monday.
COVID-19 restrictions have hammered Bagan’s hotels, restaurants, horse-cart drivers and souvenir shops. Bagan has been closed since the first COVID-19 cases were reported in March last year and residents are struggling to make ends meet, said resident U Min Chan Oo, who operates a tuk-tuk and e-bike rental firm. ....
