Since seizing power from the country’s democratically elected government in February, Myanmar’s military regime has been struggling on all fronts. Two months on, the men in uniform continue to perform poorly except when it comes to killing their own citizens, something they have excelled at, having taken the lives of more than 500 people during their crackdowns. NAYPYITAW A meeting between representatives of the government and the Myanmar military (or Tatmadaw) held in Naypyitaw on Thursday in an effort to overcome the current political crisis ended without a breakthrough.
Sources with knowledge of the meeting told The Irrawaddy that the Tatamdaw expressed its distrust in Myanmar’s election body, the Union Election Commission, and asked the government to abolish it. It also asked the government to recount all votes in the Nov. 8 general election with the military’s assistance and to postpone the incoming Parliament, which is scheduled to convene on Monday. Tensions are rising in Myanmar after military spokesman Major General Zaw Min Tun hinted at the possibility of a coup, should the military’s claims of electoral fraud go unaddressed. Particular attention has been paid to his comment on Tuesday that “The military will abide by existing laws including the Constitution.
