In recent years, Pennsylvania farmers markets have become not only places to shop for farm fresh foods, but also event-filled locations with entertainment and perks like seasonal festivals to attract more shoppers. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in the spring of 2020, farmers markets faced uncertain times in a new era where gatherings were discouraged. With 6-foot social distancing required to prevent the spread of COVID-19, markets were faced with a whole new challenge of how to attract buyers and continue to function.
For farmers markets trying to decide how to proceed in a pandemic, a major factor became Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development, which designated markets as “essential businesses” purveying foodstuffs during COVID-19. It meant the markets could remain operational if they could find ways to keep their vendors and customers safe. ....

DANBURY With coronavirus cases declining and the vaccine on the horizon for an increased number of people, the school district is exploring expansion of in-person learning.
It’s unlikely that all Danbury students will return to the buildings five days a week anytime soon, Superintendent Sal Pascarella said.
“I don t think we can have a pure system, not with the growth we have in Danbury,” he said. “There will probably be some mixing and matching, a creative solution.” ....

WESTPORT Ellen Johnston was surprised on Monday when she learned she would be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine beginning March 1.
“I didn’t think it was probably going to be until May,” said Johnston, the head coach and director of competitive swimming for the Westport Weston Family YMCA.
She said she doesn’t expect the vaccine to change her behavior or plans at all. She will still follow all of the state’s COVID guidelines, and coaching doesn’t give her much time for plans outside of the pool. ....
