(Photo: Woodville Elementary School) Woodville Elementary student Erik Jordan is this year’s state-level winner for 4th grade writing in the Young Georgia Author’s competition. His poem, “Nature’s Hymn,” was recognized as the best submission in the state in his age category. The Board of Education recognized Jordan at their May 10 meeting, during which Superintendent Matthew Cooper presented him with a trophy, and Jordan read his poem to the board. “He is a role model for all of Woodville’s students, not just academically, but I can say he’s a student of character as well,” said Woodville principal Lana Jones. “We expect big things from him. He will continue, I’m sure, to represent Habersham County in many ways.” ....
AllOnGeorgia March 10, 2021 Twelve student authors have been chosen as Bulloch County Schools’ grade-level Young Georgia Authors winners and will now advance to region competition. One student author from each grade (K-12) wrote and submitted original works ranging from poetry, short stories, essays, and more. There were 65 entries this year from across each of the 15 schools in Bulloch County. From Bulloch Co Schools : School district educators judged the local level competition. Students are not given a writing prompt, so judges evaluate entries based on expression of ideas, language use, perspective and voice. An appointed committee of English language arts professionals brought together by the First District Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) will judge each of its 17 member school districts’ system winners to select region winners for each grade level that will then advance to state. ....

Several students within the Hall County School District were recognized as finalists in the 2021 Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition. The Young Georgia Authors competition, sponsored by the Georgia Council of Teachers of English in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education, is a writing competition open to any student enrolled in Georgia public schools in grades K-12. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to develop enthusiasm for writing and to recognize student achievement in arts and academics, per a release from the Hall County School District. Competition entries must fit within a 1900-word limit, but students are not given a prompt or other guidelines to adhere to when writing. Entries may include short stories, poetry, essays/literary criticism/analysis, journalism, academic research reports, personal narratives or other original student writing. ....
