UOW Associate Professor Mirella Dottori leads research into stem-cell therapy Associate Professor Mirella Dottori, from the University of Wollongong (UOW), has been awarded close to $1 million in research funding from the Medical Research Future Fund for a project that will use human stem cells to develop a curative treatment for Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). Associate Professor Dottori, a researcher in the School of Medicine, affiliated with the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI), is the chief investigator on the project and will receive $982,861 over three years from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for her ground-breaking research. ....

The paper was written by Professor Justin Yerbury, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and his wife, Dr Rachel Yerbury. Professor Yerbury is a cell and molecular neurobiologist at the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI). A new magnetic nanoparticle could be used in combination with radiation treatment and heat therapy to kill cancer cells, according to new research from the University of Wollongong and ANSTO. The lead researchers from UOW and its clinical partners collaborated with ANSTO’s Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering to study the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. ....
