But okay, once more with feeling: Diao Yinan’s slick manhunt thriller about a gangster on the run from the law is basically a two-hour noir sizzle reel, stringing together one extravagantly cool shot after another and finding endlessly inventive ways to stage (or abstract) its pulp conventions, including violent scuffles and chases that pass into the realm of the surreal.
