Parliamentarians pledge to work for groundwater extraction management

Islamabad : Parliamentarians from National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies of Punjab and Sindh have pledged to work together to improve legislative framework governing ground water extraction in Pakistan and improve cooperation and coordination for achieving Sustainable Development Goals target on water and sanitation by 2030.
Over 25 parliamentarians of National Assembly, Senate and Provincial Assemblies of Punjab and Sindh attended a national consultative workshop on “Ground Water Extraction Management, WASH Governance and Human Rights to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene” organised by WaterAid Pakistan.

Islamabad: The subject experts of national webinar on “State of Pakistan’s Mountain Biodiversity” urged the federal and provincial governments to take stern action against the land and timber mafia causing irreparable loss to the mountain biodiversity. The land-use is being changed in violation of the respective legislation and international treaties and conventions while the government authorities remain silent and blind. The mountain biodiversity loss is causing disasters and increasing local impact of climate change.
They urged for biodiversity mapping and adequate data management to support the conservation strategies for all 11 mountain ranges in Pakistan. In the absence of federal and provincial biodiversity conservation strategies, we cannot think beyond scattered piece-meal interventions.
