(Photo by William Campbell-Corbis via Getty Images) Montana’s governor Greg Gianforte signed a bill allowing people to challenge government regulations that interfere with their religious beliefs, effectively ‘weaponising’ religion against LGBT people. The Republican signed controversial Senate Bill 215 on Thursday (22 April), otherwise known as the Montana Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), into law. The bill would enable service providers and individuals to freely deny certain goods and aid to LGBT+ people. The legislation also requires state officials to show a “compelling governmental interest” to “interfere with a person’s religious beliefs”. ....

(Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images) South Dakota has signed into law a bill that could open up anti-LGBT+ discrimination under the guise of protecting religious beliefs. Republican governor of South Dakota Kristi Noem signed Senate Bill 124 on Wednesday (10 March) which would give churches leeway to operate during the pandemic. The bill states that the government would not be able to “substantially burden a person’s exercise of religion” without “compelling government interest”. But human rights advocates say the bill would allow for discrimination against LGBT+ people across a wide range of goods and services. Activists warn the language is so broadly written that it could enable discrimination against anyone who offends an individual’s or institution’s religious beliefs. ....
South Dakota Sends Religious Refusal Bill to Gov. Noem, First Major RFRA Threat In 6 Years Last night, the South Dakota Senate passed Senate Bill 124, a religious refusal bill that would grant a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people across a wide range of goods and services. The bill now heads to Governor Kristi Noem’s desk for signature or veto. In 2015, then-Governor of Indiana Mike Pence signed a similar piece of legislation into law that encouraged widespread discrimination from medical providers, child welfare providers, businesses, government officials and taxpayer-funded entities. Mississippi also passed a RFRA in 2016. As reported by The 19th, this bill is among 36 anti-LGBTQ “religious freedom” measures coursing through state legislatures as part of a national flood of anti-LGBTQ legislation as part of an effort by national, far-right extremist groups to sow fear and division for political gain. ....
