Indiana lawmakers propose protections for businesses over coronavirus-related lawsuits


For Indiana businesses big and small, a top priority this year is protection from something that hasn’t happened yet: lawsuits from people who claim to have contracted coronavirus at a store or company.
“We want to be proactive against damaging lawsuits,” said Mark Fisher, chief policy director for the Indy Chamber. “Do you want to wait for the problem to arise to address it?”
Despite widespread concern about such lawsuits financially crippling businesses, there have been no known cases in Indiana. Still, businesses that spent the last year reacting to the unprecedented effects and regulations of the pandemic are trying to get ahead of what they, at least, anticipate will be a serious problem. Advocates for this protection say it’s critical to the industry’s financial recovery. ....

All Signs Point To A Tough Winter For Indiana Restaurants And Tourism – Indianapolis Monthly

It doesn’t take an expert to observe that more than nine months into the pandemic, amid closure after closure of beloved local shops and restaurants, the Indiana hospitality industry is in crisis. But new research from Ball State University shows exactly how convention tourism, an industry that brings in $725 million in state and local taxes annually, has suffered major blows.
Sotiris Hji-Avgoustis, a professor of hospitality and food management at Ball State University, has been researching the pandemic’s effects on the restaurant and events-tourism industry in the Indianapolis area and across the state. He’s found that pandemic safety guidelines and plunging demand have kneecapped a crucial state industry, with staffing levels at a paltry 70 percent of their peak.  ....

Crossroads Café closes its doors after more than two decades, due to COVID-19 impacts

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) Crossroads Café in Downtown Terre Haute closed its doors Wednesday for the last time.
The owner, Libby Waters, said with more expenses and less money coming in due to COVID-19, it had to happen.
It s been a dream come true. Unfortunately, it s coming to an end, she said.
Waters said owning Crossroads Café was an accomplishment. But because of continued restrictions, it was hard keeping the dream alive.
After two decades of serving the community, Crossroads Cafe in Downtown Terre Haute is closing their doors today.

Indiana Restaurants Are In Danger
INDIANAPOLIS The clock is ticking for restaurants in Indianapolis and across the state. For these restaurants, a new COVID-19 relief package is desperately needed.
“If we get thrown into not having this relief package, thousands of restaurants will close,” says Patrick Tamm, President of the Indiana Restaurant and Lodging Association. He spoke to WISH-TV about the state of Hoosier restaurants.
A new COVID-19 relief package represents a chance, a hand to pull restaurnats up and help them carry on. Tamm says
“we’re trying to find a bridge to March, February maybe, we need that [relief package] today.” ....
