MUMBAI: Dilip Kumar, one of Bollywood’s most accomplished and respected film stars, died on Wednesday aged 98, prompting tributes from across Indian and Pakistani cinema, politics, sport and even animal rights.
Alongside Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor, Kumar was one of three big names who dominated the golden age of Indian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s, en joying a career spanning more than 50 years and nearly 60 films.
Nicknamed “The Tragedy King” with brooding good looks, tousled hair, and a deep voice, he played the lead in some of the Indian film industry’s most commercially successful films of the period. ....

MUMBAI: Dilip Kumar, one of Bollywood’s most accomplished and respected film stars, died on Wednesday aged 98, prompting tributes from across Indian and Pakistani cinema, politics, sport and even animal rights.
Alongside Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor, Kumar was one of three big names who dominated the golden age of Indian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s, enjoying a career spanning more than 50 years and nearly 60 films.
Nicknamed “The Tragedy King” with brooding good looks, tousled hair, and a deep voice, he played the lead in some of the Indian film industry’s most commercially successful films of the period. But he missed out on international fame after famously turning down the chance to play Sherif Ali in David Lean’s 1962 classic “Lawrence of Arabia”. The part went to then little known Egyptian actor Omar Sharif. ....

Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar one of the biggest stars in the golden age of Indian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s passed away on Wednesday at the age of 98.
“With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip
saab,” Faisal Farooqui, a family friend, posted on Kumar s official Twitter.
According to the
Hindustan Times, Kumar had been admitted to the intensive care unit on June 30 to address medical issues related to old age. He was earlier admitted to the same hospital on June 6 after experiencing breathlessness. ....

Dilip Kumar received a Lifetime Achievement award in 2008
Dilip Kumar, one of Bollywood s biggest stars who dominated the golden age of Indian cinema from the 1940s to the 1960s, died Wednesday morning at the age of 98, a family friend said.
Kumar had been ailing for some time and was in and out of the hospital the past month.
With a heavy heart and profound grief, I announce the passing away of our beloved Dilip Saab, few minutes ago, Faisal Farooqui, a relative of Kumar, said on Twitter, referring to the actor with a term of endearment. ....
