Will New York comptroller candidates use the job to run

SHARE:
New York City comptroller candidate and Assembly Member David Weprin wants to get his fellow candidates to pledge they won’t use the office as a steppingstone to run for mayor – the way the position has been used for decades.
But not everyone is happy with Weprin’s ploy, given his track record of running for the next higher office himself.
In the office’s recent history, virtually all New York City comptrollers have tried to use the seat as a springboard to Gracie Mansion. Only former comptroller Abraham Beame was successful in becoming mayor. City Comptroller Scott Stringer is a leading contender in the Democratic mayoral primary. His predecessor, state Sen. John Liu, ran for mayor unsuccessfully in 2013. Liu’s predecessor, former Comptroller Bill Thompson, lost by 4 percentage points to Michael Bloomberg in 2009. Thompson’s predecessor, former Comptroller Alan Hevesi, also unsuccessfully ran for mayor in 2001. ....

Corey runs citywide, take two

Will Corey break the speaker curse?
One might say that Corey Johnson already fell victim to the City Council speaker curse. After all, his run for mayor ended before it began, when he closed his fledgling campaign in September and became the latest speaker to unsuccessfully seek higher office after leading the city’s legislative body. Three of the four speakers before him ran for mayor and lost in the Democratic primary. The other, Melissa Mark-Viverito, ran for both public advocate, then Congress, and lost in both primaries.
Now six months after opting out of the 2021 elections, Johnson is opting back in. He officially kicked off his campaign for New York City comptroller Tuesday with a press conference in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. And with that, he’ll get a second shot at becoming the first speaker in the modern era to extend his life in electoral politics. ....

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson announced his bid for New York City comptroller on Tuesday, upending an already crowded race, with ten candidates other previously vying for the post.
“I will be a strong and independent comptroller, who uses all the powers of the office to kickstart New York’s recovery,” Johnson said at a press conference today, touting his experience leading the city council, and pushing for programs like Fair Fares, which subsidizes MetroCards for low-income New Yorkers. “We need an experienced manager as comptroller,” he added. ....
