WASHINGTON The U.S. Air Force repelled a Chinese invasion of Taiwan during a massive war game last fall by relying on drones acting as a sensing grid, an advanced sixth-generation fighter jet able to penetrate the most contested environments, cargo planes dropping pallets of guided munitions and other novel technologies yet unseen on the modern battlefield.
But the service’s success was ultimately pyrrhic. After much loss of life and equipment, the U.S. military was able to prevent a total takeover of Taiwan by confining Chinese forces to a single area. (China considers the self-governing province of Taiwan as its sovereign territory, and has vowed to unite it with the mainland.) ....

A train partially derailed in eastern Taiwan today after being hit by an unmanned vehicle that had rolled down a hill, killing 48 people. With the train still partly in a tunnel, survivors climbed out of windows and walked along the train s roof to reach safety. ....

AeroVironment Wins $5.9M Contract For Unmanned Aircraft

Aerovironment reported a $5.9M contract win this week, saying it signed a deal to deliver its Puma 3 AE aircraft systems to a European allied nation. According to the company, the contact came in the form of a U.S. Department of Defense Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract award. The unmanned aircraft are expected to be delivered by April of 2021. AeroVironment says its Puma 3 AE has a wingspan of 9.2 feet, weighs 15 pounds and can operate for up to 2.5 hours, with a range of 12.4 miles to 37.2 miles, depending on the antenna used. ....

Israel Aerospace Signs MoU with U.A.E.’s EDGE to Develop Anti-Drone Systems

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) today announced that it has signed an agreement with U.A.E’s state-owned EDGE Group to develop anti-drone systems.
“There’s no I in MoU! IAI has declared a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with U.A.E.-based EDGE. Together we will develop systems to guard against UAVs and small drones,”the company tweeted.
This year also marked the first time that Israeli companies took part in a U.A.E. defense exhibition. Tens of Israeli firms participated in this year’s edition of the Arab world’s biggest arms fair, IDEX, in February. This thawing of friendship between the two countries locked in decades of conflict comes after the signing of U.S.-brokered peace deal, late last year. ....
