AlburyCity’s Draft Budget for 2021/22 aims to drive economic and social recovery in the wake of COVID-19, with modest rates increases to help fuel a program of capital works across the city.
The Draft Budget will be placed on display for community feedback, following its endorsement by Councillors at their meeting on 26 April.
The budget totals $159M in expenditure and features capital works of $63M, which will include:
$11.8M for roads, bridges and footpaths
$10.3M for recreation projects
$6.5M to replace, improve or upgrade public buildings
The budget also proposes a rate rise of 2.3 per cent for the average household and an increase of 1.8 per cent for businesses. Waste management charges will return to pre-COVID-19 levels and no increase to water and sewer charges is proposed for 2021/22. ....

The Albury community’s commitment to making a real difference to our environment has been recognised with the city winning the top honour at the 2020 Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns Awards over the weekend.
The city was named overall winner of the NSW awards, recognising the community-wide efforts to lead the way in sustainability and environmental initiatives.
At the weekend event, AlburyCity also won awards for our organics recovery operations, the Renewable Energy Hub at the Albury Waste Management Centre, our education program Halve Waste and infrastructure improvements at the Albury Waste Management Centre along with a highly commended for the Repair Café, which helps people to repair and recycle goods that would otherwise be thrown out. ....

Some Albury homes and businesses are continuing to experience discoloured water flowing from their taps. Although the water may be discoloured, our extensive testing and sampling program shows the water remains safe to drink.
AlburyCity is working closely with NSW Health to maintain a stringent testing regime to ensure safety remains uncompromised.
The discolouration has been caused by conditions in Lake Hume, from where AlburyCity’s raw water supply is taken.
The water is sourced from a deep point in the lake where a phenomenon called ‘stratification’ means the water at that point is very cold and low in oxygen. The low oxygen causes an increase in manganese and iron levels, which causes the discolouration. ....

In a major coup for local rugby league fans, the Melbourne Storm and Newcastle Knights will play their one and only trial match at Albury Sports Ground next weekend.
After the Newcastle Knights deemed the travel risk too high under the current COVID environment to travel to Melbourne, Albury will become the beneficiary of the reschedule.
Storm CEO Justin Rodski says while it’s disappointing for their members and fans in Melbourne, it’s an opportunity to say thanks to the Albury community.
“It’s important that our players get the chance to prepare as best they can for the season ahead which is why we will travel to Albury for the trial,” Justin explained on melbournestorm.com.au ....
