Limit on Lab-grown Human Embryos Dropped by Stem Cell Body

Limit on Lab-Grown Human Embryos Dropped by Stem Cell Body
The International Society for Stem Cell Research relaxed the famous 14-day rule on culturing human embryos in its latest research guidelines

The international body representing stem-cell scientists has torn up a decades-old limit on the length of time that scientists should grow human embryos in the lab, giving more leeway to researchers who are studying human development and disease.
Previously, the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) recommended that scientists culture human embryos for no more than two weeks after fertilization. But on 26 May, the society said it was relaxing this famous limit, known as the ‘14-day rule’. Rather than replace or extend the limit, the ISSCR now suggests that studies proposing to grow human embryos beyond the two-week mark be considered on a case-by-case basis, and be subjected to several phases of review to determine at what point the exp ....

Influential panel recommends removing '14-day rule' on lab-grown embryos

An influential scientific panel says researchers should be allowed to grow human embryos in a lab for more than two weeks and recommends lifting the so-called 14-day rule, according to news reports.
The 14-day rule refers to a strict cap placed on the length of time lab-grown embryos are allowed to mature, in order to avoid ethical dilemmas that would arise as the tissues became more and more human-like,
STAT reported. Some countries, including Australia and the U.K., have gone so far as to write the 14-day rule into law, while other countries, like the U.S., enforce the rule through regulatory research bodies. That said, in the past, scientists struggled to keep lab-grown embryos alive for that long. ....

Biden scraps human fetal tissue research limits while New York stops stem cell research funding

Biden scraps human fetal tissue research limits while New York stops stem cell research funding
Appeared in BioNews 1092
President Joe Biden s administration has reversed the Trump-era decision which restricted federal funding for medical research using human fetal tissue from abortions.
A statement released by the US National Institute of Health (NIH) removed the ban on governmental researchers conducting such research and discontinued an ethical review board for screening external grant applications that was comprised primarily of individuals who publically oppose abortion.
I m relieved, said Professor Alta Charo, professor of law and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in a Science article. I would call it a very welcome return to a socially responsible approach to the use of fetal tissue in research. The announcement was similarly applauded by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, which stated: Ideologically driven politicians ....

Pre-embryos made in lab could spur research, ethics debates

Updated 3/17/2021 12:03 PM
WASHINGTON For the first time, scientists have used human cells to make structures that mimic the earliest stages of development, which they say will pave the way for more research without running afoul of restrictions on using real embryos.
Two papers published Wednesday in the journal Nature detail how two teams of scientists independently made such structures.

They stressed that their work is only for research, not reproduction, but it likely will pose new ethical questions.
œStudying early human development is really difficult. It s basically a black box, said Jun Wu, a stem cell biologist at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center. ....
