After an unprecedented high, the trajectory of COVID-19 cases seem to be finally falling down in India. With cases peaking across states, the positivity rate going down, experts believe that the deadly second wave of coronavirus, attributed to the mutant virus variant, seems to be finally coming closer to declining.
Yet, there s one factor that continues to be concerning- staggering fatalities.
Despite the second wave of coronavirus showing signs of ebbing since the second week of May, across India, hospitalizations continue to be on the higher side, and COVID-19 deaths are rising.
If numbers are to go by, not only did the rising numbers engulf the country starting February end, the number of fatalities have been continuously on the rise. A study conducted by John Hopkins University points out that the number of new deaths rose by a whopping 143% in the recent three months. ....

The Supreme Court on Saturday set up a 12-member National Task Force (NTF) to facilitate public health response to Covid-19, including streamlining of oxygen distribution in the country, based on scientific and specialized domain knowledge.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Saturday set up a 12-member National Task Force (NTF) to facilitate public health response to Covid-19, including streamlining of oxygen distribution in the country, based on scientific and specialized domain knowledge.
A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and M.R. Shah said: A consensus has emerged that there is a need to ensure that the allotments of medical oxygen to the states and UTs are made on a scientific, rational and equitable basis. At the same time, it must allow for flexibility to meet unforeseen demands due to emergencies which may arise within the allocated territories. ....

New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, the first meeting of the 12-member National Task Force set up by the Supreme Court to ensure that medical oxygen is delivered throughout the country in a streamlined manner through an effective and transparent mechanism was held on Sunday, sources said.
All the National Task Force members commended the significant work done by Ministries and Departments of Government of India in augmenting the oxygen production capacities as well as in ensuring its efficient distribution, sources told ANI.
The task force members also provided specific suggestions on increasing oxygen production and availability, managing the demand side of medical oxygen, and parameters on which individual health facilities could ensure economy in the use of medical oxygen, sources said. ....

The Supreme Court said the national task force will be responsible for formulating a methodology for the scientific allocation of medical oxygen to states amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Supreme Court on Saturday constituted a 12-member national task force that would be tasked with formulating a methodology for the scientific allocation of medical oxygen to states and Union Territories (UTs) during the pandemic.
Issuing the order, a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah said this taskforce would be at liberty to draw upon the human resources of the Union government for consultation and information. It would also be free to formulate its modalities and procedure for working. ....
