Furious reaction as Brits urged not to book holidays

The travel industry has reacted with anger to suggestions from senior politicians that Brits should avoid booking holidays for the upcoming summer.
Transport secretary, Grans Shapps, said it was “too early” to consider plans for the summer as the Covid-19 pandemic continued to sweep the country.
However, condemnation was quick, with Sue Ockwell, leader of the
Association of Independent Tour Operators, branding the comments “puerile and nonsensical”.
“We are talking about the end of May or June, which is a long way off,” she added.
The sentiments were echoed by the
European Travel Commission (ETC), which strongly condemned the new enforcement measures for travellers announced by the government. ....

IT was the last day of June, 1954, and the eclipse of the sun seemed like an irresistible attraction – cloud cover, as ever, permitting.
A man who lived near Cupar, Fife, climbed over 11,000ft in his four-seater plane to get a closer view of the eclipse. The first clouds he encountered were at 5,000ft. When he got beyond the second layer he had a perfect view but discovered that the special black lens he had bought in Switzerland were not quite black enough. The sun soon began to blind him, and he had to look away.
He did, however, report that he could not recall seeing a clearer sky – he was able to see the European coastline from the Baltic down to Denmark and right into Germany. ....

And while I’m aware that there’s a redundancy or two (or three) in those adjectives, since truth is the seal of God, and my refrain as a litigator was “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” I gotta call ’em as I see ’em. All three grandchildren, though, were born before I began writing this column/blog, and thus their births never received their proper due. That’s not the case, though, for my newest grandson Aiden Murry (Meir Eliezer) Glenn born to Gabrielle Kaplan Glenn and Allen Glenn on November 26, 2020 (10 Kislev 5781) at 12:06 a.m., weighing in at 6 lbs, 1.5 ozs. A Thanksgiving gift like no other; a grandchild whose bassinet overlooks the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and for whom, therefore, no passport will be needed for grandparent-grandch ....
