Mother sentenced to 8 years for abusing infant

Cheyenne Hooper, 23, of Lima, was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison on a second-degree felony charge of endangering children for injuries sustained by her infant daughter nearly two years ago.

Lyla Stratton, who suffered potentially life-threatening injuries more than two years ago while in the care of her mother, Cheyenne Hooper, was outside the Allen County Justice Center on Thursday along side family and friends. Hooper was sentenced to eight year in prison for causing serious physical harm to the girl who was seven months old at the time.
Female inmates, mental health issues challenge jail resources

The Auglaize County Law Enforcement Center may require some modifications to deal with increases in the number of female and mentally ill inmates, Auglaize County officials said.
WAPAKONETA An increase in women jailed in Auglaize County has it considering its options on the 23-year-old Auglaize County Law Enforcement Center.
“When the facility was built in ‘98, we could only house 11 females,” said Auglaize County Sheriff Mike Vorhees, who started his first term in January. “On the average, since I’ve taken office, the average has been 15 or more. (Thursday) morning we had 17 females.”
Commissioners approve CARES Act dollars for security upgrade
LIMA The Allen County Commissioners on Thursday approved the use of roughly $250,000 in CARES Act funding to upgrade the Allen County Justice Center’s security system.
The project, which is being completed through Northwest Security Systems, will start within the next four to six weeks.

State funding approved for capital projects in region

LIMA The Ohio General Assembly’s passage of Ohio Senate Bill 310 and the state’s associated capital improvements budget has approved funding toward a number of local projects throughout the region.
By county, they are:
• Greater Lima Region Park & Amphitheater: $1,250,000
• Center for Health Science Education and Innovation: $1,000,000
• IT Infrastructure (Rhodes State College): $737,156
• Basic Renovations (Rhodes State College): $600,000
• Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center: $500,000
• Allen County Airport Communications: $300,000
• Allen County Justice Center: $250,000
• Lima All Ability Playground: $200,000
• Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center: $200,000
• Lima Crossroads Crisis Centers: $12,000
$6.7M in state funds headed to Allen Co.

LIMA Thanks to the state’s latest capital budget, a total of $6.7 million is expected to head to multiple projects in Allen County, including sizable appropriations for Lima’s downtown amphitheater project, The Ohio State University-Lima and Rhodes State College.
Out of the 11 allocations set aside for Allen County, the largest single line item is $1.7 million allocated to OSU-Lima’s project to renovate the campus’s oldest building Galvin Hall.
“Everybody that’s been a student at OSU-Lima have taken classes in that building. The faculty that has worked has taught there. It is the center of OSU’s presence on that campus. It was established in the late ’60s, and now it’s time for some investment to bring it up to a 21st century educational environment,” OSU-LIMA Dean and Director Tim Rehner said.
