Cape firefighters threaten DA to intervene in dispute or face losing votes

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town’s firefighters have taken their dispute with the municipality to the doorstep of the DA – threatening the party to intervene or face losing votes.
The action came as the City told 439 of the firefighters that if they pleaded guilty to the charges they faced for “striking illegally” in 2019, they would avoid disciplinary action.
In addition, they would be slapped with a final written warning valid for 12 months and four days suspension without pay.
In a march to the DA offices on Saturday, the party was told to intervene or face being punished at the polls in the upcoming local government elections on October 27. ....

About 500 Cape Town firefighters are facing disciplinary hearings for embarking on an unprotected strike in 2019.
The strikers were demanding an eight-hour shift instead of the customary 24-hours. 
The City says the 24-hour shift is rational and necessary for the nature of the work.
The union for the firefighters says the City is dividing the firefighters by offering 439 a deal and taking strong action against 55 ‘ringleaders’.
The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) says the City of Cape Town is planning to dismiss about 500 firefighters currently facing disciplinary hearings for going on an unprotected strike in 2019, according to

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) says the City of Cape Town is planning to dismiss about 500 firefighters currently facing disciplinary hearings for going on an unprotected strike in 2019.
But the City says no decision has been taken to dismiss the firefighters and that a proposal has been made to resolve the matter so that “any possible sanction of dismissal can be avoided”.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) says the City of Cape Town is planning to dismiss about 500 firefighters currently facing disciplinary hearings for going on an unprotected strike in 2019.
But the City says no decision has been taken to dismiss the firefighters and that a proposal has been made to resolve the matter so that “any possible sanction of dismissal can be avoided”.
Samwu Cape Metro organiser Archie Hearne said the strike was over a demand for eight-hour shifts instead of the standard 24-hour shift for firefighters.
Hearne said the City was served notice of the grievance in 2018 but nothing was addressed. “In October 2019 the firefighters took a stance and started working eight hours. The matter was ultimately taken to court by the City and the strike was deemed unlawful. ....
