The Republican National Committee s warning shot to the committee that organizes presidential debates every four years reflects former President Donald Trump s continued grip on the GOP.
In a letter sent to the Commission on Presidential Debates on Tuesday, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel laid out a series of changes she said would ensure the impartiality of debates. McDaniel cited several rules and pieces of logistics she said disadvantaged Trump in the two debates in which he squared off against Joe Biden, then the Democratic nominee.
The letter says the to-be-determined 2024 GOP nominee might not participate in debates absent rules changes. It also fueled speculation Trump could run again in 2024. ....

Biden pitch divides Michigan lawmakers: Democrats embrace, GOP wary
Washington  Nearly 100 days into his term, President Joe Biden laid out a sweeping plan Wednesday to alter the social safety net, a legislative proposal that Michigan lawmakers in Congress gave mixed reviews, with one Republican calling it pipe-dream spending.
Biden highlighted the $1.8 trillion proposal during his first joint address to Congress, a scaled-down affair with only about 200 people in the House chamber instead of the usual 1,600 due to the ongoing pandemic.
Only three Michigan members attended in person, all Democrats: Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Lansing and Reps. Debbie Dingell of Dearborn and Brenda Lawrence of Southfield.  ....

Coronavirus restrictions may curb President Joe Biden s ability to use his address to a joint session of Congress to lean on lawmakers to approve trillions of dollars in federal government spending.
Only 200-odd people will be in the House of Representatives chamber on Wednesday to hear Biden s first presidential report in person. Many Republicans have opted not to attend the event, scheduled during a congressional recess, and guests are not invited.
The COVID-19 restrictions mean Biden will deliver his address to an even smaller audience as its viewership has dwindled year after year. They also make it more difficult for him to orchestrate traditional special guest moments as he seeks to build momentum behind his $2.25 trillion infrastructure package and coming American Families Plan. ....
