(Photo | Express) By Express News Service BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has ramped up health infrastructure across the state by adding twice the strength of general and ICU beds in dedicated Covid hospitals as the infection is spreading over 38 times faster during the second wave of the pandemic.

Two more also succumbed to the disease in last 24 hours.The test positivity rate (TPR) also shot up to 10.63 per cent (pc) from 8.44 pc a day before even as the number of tests was more. As many as 34,450 samples, including 13,000 through RT-PCR, were tested during the period.

Express News Service BHUBANESWAR:  The surge in coronavirus cases across the State might be fuelled by mutated strains as at least 10 per cent (pc) samples sequenced for Covid-19 strains in Odisha this year so far have been found to be variants of concern (VoC) as flagged by the National Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC).  Of the 569 samples from the State sequenced by two laboratories under Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the highly infectious UK variant (B.1.1.7) has been detected in 24 samples and double mutant in 24 others besides five with the N440K variant. South Africa and Brazil variants are yet to be found in the samples here.

BHUBANESWAR: The current growth rate of coronavirus cases in Odisha has thrown up serious concerns as the number of infection grew 26.2 times this month against the highest growth rate of 4.7 times calculated in May 2020 during the first wave of the pandemic. This was sharpest ever growth recorded in the state so far. As the infection is spreading rapidly, the high growth signals that more bad days are ahead. In view of the strong second wave, the state government has decided to ramp up health infrastructure across the state by adding twice the strength of ICU beds, four times HDU beds and sufficient general beds to cater to the needs of patients in coming days.
