Coastal News Today | Int'l - How 'ghost' fishing gear affects at-risk species and fisheries' bottom line

Southwest Nova Scotia is one of Canada s most productive lobster fishing region, spanning more than 21,000 square kilometers and contributing a significant portion of the country s lobster supply.
With a busy fishery, though, has come the growing challenge of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) a collection of traps, ropes, hooks, cables and other fishing-related equipment that drift through the water column or litter the ocean floor. It is a global problem, but one that hasn t been widely quantified.
Researchers at Dalhousie University wanted to find out how much gear might be in the Southwest Nova Scotia (SWNS) fishing zone and how it might be affecting the existing fishery. Their recently published baseline study provides the first preliminary assessment of environmental and economic impacts of ALDFG on the commercial lobster industry in the area. ....

Researchers at Dalhousie University are teaming up with three other Nova Scotia universities to expand a program that tests for COVID-19 indicators in wastewater.
About $850,000 is being invested into the expansion. The work builds on the recent results of a pilot study in Halifax and Wolfville where the virus that causes COVID-19 was detected in wastewater.
Now testing will be done at many more locations in the province.
We ll be open to the province to focus on what could be priority sites, said Dr. Graham Gagnon, the lead researcher of the project who is the director of the Dalhousie University Centre for Water Resource Studies. ....

Researchers at Dalhousie University who are gathering information on housing for LGBTQ seniors are hoping their work may help inform the Nova Scotia government s discussion on affordable housing and that it will eventually help shape national policy too.
Jacqueline Gahagan is the lead investigator of a project that examined international policies and gathered feedback from people across Canada.
The thread in all of that is really about ongoing stigma and discrimination that the older LGBTQ folks are facing. And this is particularly important in the Canadian context, where we see, again, strong human-rights legislation, but perhaps a lack of enforcement of regulation in the ho ....
