Guardian appoints Merope Mills as editor of new Saturday magazine

The Guardian today announces that Merope Mills has been appointed as editor of its new Saturday magazine.
Mills is currently partner and editor at Tortoise Media, having previously held a number of senior roles at the Guardian including US west coast editor, editor of the Saturday paper, and Weekend magazine editor during an 18 year career from 2000 until 2018.
Guardian editor-in-chief Katharine Viner said:
“Merope is a brilliant editor who brings experience, flair, and great ideas to everything she does. I am delighted she is returning to the Guardian to launch our new magazine which will showcase the best features, interviews, books, culture, lifestyle and travel each week for Saturday Guardian readers.” ....

The New European bought by consortium from Archant

A consortium including Mark Thompson and Lionel Barber has conducted a management buy-out of The New European, the make-shift weekly print title initially launched on a four-week run in 2016 to fight Brexit.
TNE was owned by Archant, the local publishing group based in Norwich.
Its chief content officer, former Daily Mirror executive Matt Kelly, led the fund-raising effort, and as of this morning has left Archant to become CEO and editor-in-chief of The New European.
The executive chairman will be Gavin O Reilly, the Irish businessman who was former CEO of Independent News & Media, and whose father Tony was for many years proprietor of The Independent. ....

Tortoise sees Covid 'boost' engagement and membership


Slow news outfit Tortoise Media grew its paid-for members by about 50% in 2020, according to co-founder James Harding.
The ad-shunning start-up, which launched in April 2019, now has more than 80,000 people signed up – of whom about a third are under 30.
According to editor-in-chief Harding “the better part of 60%” are paid-for members (nearly 50,000) and the rest have registered for the free daily Sensemaker email or taken on a free trial.
Membership ranges from £80 (full price) to £50 for a team member with other packages for businesses and free subscriptions for students. So the title could potentially be making in excess of £3m a year in subscriptions income, although Tortoise does not make its figures available. ....
