WARREN A Warren man convicted of stealing an 1861-model firearm was given a five-year probation for the offense.
Andre McCain, 54, of 250 Tod Ave. NW, Apt. 3030, had pleaded guilty in November to a charge of attempted grand theft.
Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice said Thursday the probation will be intensive supervision and begin with a stay at the Northeast Ohio Alternative Program, which the judge said will teach McCain life skills that he may have forgotten or never learned.
McCain, who his attorney Robert Lee Root III said was indigent, also will write a letter of apology to the Warren business where the gun was taken in June 2020. The police report termed the gun as a .41-caliber 1861 double-barrel Derringer pistol, and internet searches showed this type of pistol is valued between $1,000 and $3,000.
