Too much to take: mentioning '128' attracts police action in Turkey

One phrase has dominated Turkey’s streets, opposition statements and social media in recent days: “Where’s the $128 billion?”
The question relates to the amount taken from central bank reserves over two years to prop up the ailing Turkish lira, when the economy was under the stewardship of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, former finance minister Berat Albayrak.
The depletion of foreign currency reserves raised its head after the shock resignation of Mr Albayrak in November and the introduction of a new economic team at the ministry and central bank.
The biggest opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), began hanging banners asking the question from its buildings around the country last week, prompting frantic efforts by government-appointed governors to remove them. ....

Victoria University of Wellington awarded funding towards Zero Carbon Plan

The goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2030 for Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington is a step closer today as the University is awarded funding to install LED lighting in its Rankine Brown building.
It is forecast that the LED lighting will achieve carbon savings of at least 75 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually for the University, while also reducing operating costs.
$175,000 has been awarded for the project. Funding is administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), as part of the State Sector Decarbonisation Fund. Successful projects were announced today by Climate Change Minister Hon James Shaw. ....

Turkish prisons overcrowded under Erdogan's rule

Turkey’s prison population has more than doubled in recent years, while the government jailed political opponents, lawyers and journalists at an increasing rate.
Recent
figures from Turkstat, the government’s statistics agency, showed there were 291,546 prisoners at the end of 2019 compared to 120,194 a decade earlier.
Since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AKP party came to power in 2002, there has been nearly a four-fold rise in the number of incarcerations.
Inmate numbers have risen by at least 10 per cent each year since 2013, according to Turkstat.
From the end of 2010 to the end of 2020, Turkey s prison population grew by 13 per cent, ....
