Barrow pubs and restaurants busy on first weekend after May 17

Saturday proved to be a fruitful night for Barrow’s pubs and restaurants.
It was the first weekend back for hospitality businesses since the easing of Covid-19 restrictions allowed the sector to welcome customers back inside on May 17.
Establishments saw steady trade and little objection to virus safety measures such as social distancing and track and trace.
Michael Mulgrew, owner of the King Alfred on Walney, said it was as a good night for the pub.
The King Alfred recently surprised customers after unveiling its major refurbishment which saw carpets replaced, a new wooden ceiling, lighting, seating area and a mural of Walney by a local artist installed. ....

Family of Andrew Blowers files wrongful death lawsuit against police

BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) âÂ The family of a man shot to death during a police confrontation last September has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Battle Creek and Calhoun County as well as local police agencies.
The Battle Creek Enquirer says the $15.5 million suit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, Southern Division and it alleges 22-year-old Andrew Blowers was killed in an unjustified use of deadly force by two officers from the Battle Creek Police Department and a deputy from the Calhoun County Sheriff Department.
Blowers was shot following a pursuit which ended on Logistics Drive in the Fort Custer Industrial Park just after midnight last September 5. ....

$15 Million Wrongful Death Suit Filed in Marshall Man's Death

A $15 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a 22-year-old Marshall man shot and killed by police last September.
The suit filed Wednesday in federal court on behalf of 22-year-old Andrew Blowers of Marshall, names the defendants as the city of Battle Creek, Battle Creek Police Department Chief Jim Blocker, two Battle Creek Police officers, the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners, Calhoun County Sheriff Steven Hinkley as well as a deputy with the sheriff’s department.
The suit alleges that the Battle Creek police officers and Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputy who opened fire “used unnecessary, excessive, reckless and deadly force.” ....

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - After being killed by officers last year, the estate of Andrew Blowers is suing the Battle Creek police officers and Calhoun County deputies, citing excessive force.
Blowers was shot and killed after leading authorities on a high-speed chase on Sept. 5, after officers tried to pull him over on suspicion of drunk driving.
