The U.S.'s first open-air GM mosquitoes have taken flight

May 14, 2021 at 10:53 am
The first genetically modified mosquitoes that will be allowed to fly free outdoors in the United States have started reaching the age for mating in the Florida Keys.
In a test of the biotech company Oxitec’s GM male mosquitoes for pest control, these
Aedes aegypti started growing from tiny eggs set out in toaster-sized, hexagonal boxes on suburban private properties in late April. On May 12, experiment monitors confirmed that males had matured enough to start flying off on their own to court American female mosquitoes.
This short-term Florida experiment marks the first outdoor test in the United States of a strain of GM male mosquitoes as a highly targeted pest control strategy. This strain is engineered to shrink local populations of ....

According to Reuters, Oxitec, a British-based biotechnology firm, and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) launched the new project after an odyssey spanning more than a decade to secure regulatory approval.
Oxitec and local authorities said they started the project to reduce Aedes aegypti species spreading these diseases.
It is understood that half a dozen boxes containing the OX5034 mosquito created by the biotech firm were released in the Florida Keys, an archipelago stretching 120 miles (195 km) off the southern tip of the state. ....

Genetically engineered mosquitoes have been released in the U.S. for the first time in the Florida Keys, with hopes of quelling wild, disease-carrying mosquito populations in the region.
British-based biotech firm Oxitec genetically engineered Aedes aegypti non-biting male mosquitoes to carry a lethal gene that gets passed onto their offspring when they mate with wild biting female mosquitoes. The offspring are unable to survive, hence controlling the population of disease-carrying species, according to the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD), one of the entities that approved the firm’s project.  ....

Bill Gates-Funded Company Releases Genetically Modified Mosquitoes in US
Genetically modified mosquitoes have been released for the first time in the United States as part of an experiment to combat insect-borne diseases such as Dengue fever, yellow fever, and the Zika virus.
UK-based biotechnology firm Oxitec, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said it released the mosquitoes in six locations in Monroe County’s Florida Keys: two on Cudjoe Key, one on Ramrod Key, and three on Vaca Key.
It’s part of an effort to help tackle a disease-transmitting invasive mosquito population the Aedes aegypti mosquito species that’s responsible for “virtually all mosquito-borne diseases transmitted to humans,” according to the company. ....
