David Schwendiman: Who will be the next United States attorney for Utah?
It is time for a woman of color to be appointed to the position.

In the next few weeks, the Biden administration will make a significant, but largely unnoticed decision affecting Utah. The president will nominate a new United States attorney and send that person’s name to the Senate for confirmation. Every person in Utah has a stake in who that will be.
The new United States attorney and the 45 attorneys that person will lead wield extraordinary, life-changing power. As important as anything, they are entrusted with the authority to enforce federal laws that protect the vulnerable; laws that, among other things, protect the disadvantaged, the abused and victims of hate crime, discrimination and official misconduct. ....

Red Rock Wilderness Battle Continues With Trolling Legislation
Sen. Mitt Romney, R-UT, and Rep. John Curtis, R-UT, introduced legislation Thursday to designate 289,000 acres of land in Illinois as federally protected wilderness. It’s an attempt to troll Sen. Dick Durbin, D-IL, who introduced America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act Monday that would designate 8.4 million acres in Utah as federally-protected wilderness areas. Out-of-state politicians shouldn’t make decisions about Utah’s public lands, Romney and Curtis said. An aide for Durbin told KUER the senator supports conserving lands in Illinois. ....

Davenport mom returns to US nearly 3 years in Mexico


Sunday was Mother’s Day, but Alejandra Juarez was eager to serve her daughters rather than receive special treatment.
Juarez returned Saturday to her Davenport home, nearly three years after being forced to leave while facing a deportation order. Having received temporary permission to come back, she was reunited with her husband, Cuauthemos “Temo” Juarez, and her daughters, Pamela and Estela.
Alejandra Juarez made a hybrid breakfast for her Mexican-American daughters: chocolate-chip pancakes to suit their American cravings and chorizo (sausage) with eggs for their Mexican side.
Juarez, 41, said she is delighted to be making meals again for her family after 33 months in Mexico. ....
