May 24, 2021 On April 26, the researcher of the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity, and president of the Senda Darwin Foundation, Juan Armesto, was elected as a Foreign Fellow of the United States Academy of Sciences. In this announcement, 120 new members were appointed, among which, 59 correspond to women, and 30 to international members. With this designation, the ecologist becomes the ninth Chilean to belong to the NAS, a list that also includes two more researchers from the IEB: Mary Kalin and Pablo Marquet. Meanwhile, Jorge Allende, Juan Carlos Castilla, Claudio Bunster, Francisco Bezanilla, Ramón Latorre and Juan Carlos Sáez, are the other Chilean scientists who are part of this network. ....

Natural chemicals found in green tea and red wine may disrupt a key step of the Alzheimer’s disease pathway, according to new research from the University of Leeds. In early-stage laboratory experiments, the researchers identified the process which allows harmful clumps of protein to latch on to brain cells, causing them to die. They were able to interrupt this pathway using the purified extracts of EGCG from green tea and resveratrol from red wine. The findings, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, offer potential new targets for developing drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease, which affects some 800,000 people in the UK alone, and for which there is currently no cure. ....
