Nanotechnology could enable test for early Alzheimer's disease, study suggests

Scientists have discovered previously unseen signs in the blood which they say could be used to test for Alzheimer’s disease, years before its symptoms appear.
The study used nanotechnology to extract blood signals of neurodegeneration in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers say tests that capture early signs of neurodegeneration in blood offer enormous potential for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia patients to receive effective treatment or manage effectively their progressive condition before significant brain damage occurs.
Currently Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed using brain scans, and is only possible after someone has been showing behavioural symptoms, such as memory impairment. ....

University of Manchester scientists use nanotechnology in early Alzheimer's test Prolific North

by Alistair Hardaker
Scientists from the University of Manchester have discovered blood biomarkers which could one day be used to test for Alzheimer’s disease, years before its symptoms appear.
The study, funded by the Medical Research Council, used nanotechnology developed and patented by the Nanomedicine Lab in Manchester, to extract blood signals of brain degeneration in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease.
Currently the disease can be diagnosed by brain scans and is only possible after someone has begun to show behavioural symptoms such as memory impairment.
The new technology could allow for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease to be magnified and analysed.  ....
