Wednesday, 10 March 2021 Asian Games gold medallist Margielyn Didal and Shin Sanbongi have been named respective women’s and men’s Asia Skater of the Year for 2020 at the inaugural Asia Skateboarding Awards, with each receiving $1,500 (£1,000/€1,200).. The event involved more than 250 nominations across six categories using video clips, with a final adjudication for Skater of the Year. Entries were received from all over Asia, including Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, the Maldives, Afghanistan, Iran and Palestine. Didal, a 21-year-old from Cebu in The Philippines, was chosen from an entry of 60 women skateboarders. She won street gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, and won two titles at the Southeast Asian Games the Philippines hosted a year later. ....

Iloilo’s Christopher “Ping” Hurich has scored a nomination from the Asia Skateboarding Awards for Fast Feet, a category that looks at the precision in speed and space used by the feet to execute multiple tricks. The Iloilo representative in local and national skateboarding competitions was nominated for the category on January 9, 2021, after first receiving a general nomination in December 2020 for the inaugural Asia Skateboarding Awards. The two-time champion of the Vans National Go Skateboarding Day in 2016 and 2019 was seen in a nominees’ highlights video on Asia Skateboarding Awards social media, alongside some of the most well known and talented skaters in Asia. The video was shot at the Iloilo Public Skatepark. ....
Didal has added another accolade in her stellar resume after joining 78 women from over 24 countries to be nominated in the awards. After the selection process through Kenny Reed, technical director and renowned skater and coach of Myanmar’s skateboarding team, winners will be determined by a panel of jury composed of global skateboarding icons. Other awards include Vertical Ripper, Style for Miles, Asia Rookie of the Year, Hidden Gem, Creative Sole, Fastest feet in the East, and Trick of the Year. The 21-year-old Didal followed up her 2018 Asian Games gold medal (Street) by winning two more in the 2019 SEA Games in the Game of skate and Street categories. ....
