A blanket of thick hail, rain and flash flooding has battered Tamworth this evening, as severe thunderstorms roll across NSW s northern inland. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning on Wednesday afternoon for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain in the Northwest Slopes and Plains, Northern Rivers and Tablelands. But Tamworth bore the brunt of one particular storm cell late on Wednesday, with images from local residents revealing hail carpeting their backyards in its wake. TWEED Shire Council s Stotts Island tip is closed today. The facility opened briefly this morning but has generally been closed this week due to flooding. FLOODWATERS closed roads and cut off residents from essential services on the Tweed yesterday. State Emergency Service Murwillumbah Unit volunteers were yesterday afternoon tasked to help NSW Ambulance paramedics to access a patient near Murwillumbah. Paramedics could not reach the patient, suffering from a medical condition, by road as Cane Rd was flooded between Condong and Kynnumboon. NSW SES spokesman Mitchell Clout said the organisation s Tweed Heads unit had been the busiest in the state, with at least 156 jobs since the weather event began. Evacuation orders were issued for some parts of the Tweed yesterday but the region appeared to have escaped severe flood impacts as rain eased and the river levels dropped throughout the day. ....
