Whitsunday Regional Council approved plans for Serenity Eco Retreat to be built on a former cattle and horse grazing property at 186 Tucker Road in Riordanvale just eight minutes drive from Airlie Beach. The retreat will include eight 18sq m eco tents, two eco cabins and an eco-sustainable dwelling to be used as the caretaker’s residence. Each are kitted out with a water tank, bathroom pod with toilet, shower and vanity, kitchenette with stainless barbecue and a 12V bar fridge — all powered by wind and solar.

Nicholas Cronan, whose property is about an hour’s drive north of Mackay and 50 minutes south of Airlie Beach, lodged plans to Mackay Regional Council to create a space for five recreational vehicles up to 5.5m long. “We feel that there is a growing need for small facilities offering a quiet secluded break away from the large crowded caravan parks,” Mr Cronan stated in his application. “We intend to offer our guests a unique experience on a tropical fruit farm with over 200 different varieties of fruit and nuts trees.

Citizens inform grassroots action plan to protect reef

From Finch Hatton to Slade Point, more than 50 residents were at the launch of Reef Catchments Community Action Plan which covers the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday region. CEO Katrina Dent said it was created from a groundswell of ideas from the community about what were the priorities for (their) neck of the woods when it came to the reef. Ms Dent said funding from the Great Barrier Reef Foundation had allowed Reef Catchments to develop a road map to carry out the community s proposals.
