Housing completions in Dublin hit a 10-year high in the final quarter of last year despite the pandemic causing widespread disruption across the construction sector.
The latest Dublin Economic Monitor, a report compiled on behalf of the city’s four local authorities, said the number of new homes completed in the capital between October and December rose to 2,472.
“This level was 21 per cent above the same quarter in 2019 and will provide much-needed supply to a housing market which is currently dealing with a significant demand-supply imbalance,” it said. ....

Almost a billion pounds has been lost in tourism in Northern Ireland since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, a Stormont committee has heard.
A senior figure in tourism said the industry had not expected the health crisis to have lasted as long but emphasised a position of “real hope” with the rollout of the vaccination programme.
Dr Joanne Stuart, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Tourism Alliance, said there is now a need to “look beyond Covid”. ....

Irish consumers are still paying a massive premium on mortgage products compared to their European counterparts.
Figures from the Central Bank show the average rate charged on new mortgages here in January was 2.79 per cent, compared to a euro area average of 1.35 per cent. The Irish rate was the highest in the euro area.
The 1.5 per cent differential is estimated to cost Irish homebuyers an additional €80,000 on a typical €300,000 mortgage.
Critics say the premium levied on Irish borrowers is evidence of a lack of competition in the Irish market, a situation made worse by the recent departure of Ulster Bank. ....

ULSTER WILL FACE Premiership side Harlequins away from home in the round-of-16 of the Challenge Cup next month following the official European Professional Club Rugby [EPCR] draw this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Andy Friend’s Connacht will also face English opposition after being drawn away to Leicester Tigers for their knock-out clash.
Ulster’s meeting with Quins is set to take place at Twickenham Stoop on the weekend of 2/3/4 April, while Connacht will be at Welford Road the same weekend.  ....
