After extensive delays and community-wide conflict, the years-long debate about the future of the Harley Clarke Mansion appears to be headed toward resolution after City Council voted Monday to accept Artists Book House’s proposal for the property. The final tally on the issue was 7-1, with Ald. Tom Suffredin (6th) as the lone dissention and Ald. Ann Rainey (8th), who attended the meeting, abstaining from the vote. One of four groups who submitted proposals for the property, Artists Book House hopes to transform the mansion into a literary center. The organization received the highest rating in a weighted review of the proposals from city staff members which looked at factors including public benefit and financial plausibility. The panel consisted of eight city staff members representing sectors such as the city’s Public Works Agency and Community Development Department, as well as its purchasing division in the city manager’s office, city Management Analyst Tasheik ....
Evanston Now Eric Young. Two candidates defeated challenges to their nominating papers before Evanston’s Electoral Board today, while two others ended up being removed from the ballot. The candidates who won were Eric Young, running for 3rd Ward alderman, and Rebeca Mendoza, running for 5th Ward alderman. Both faced challenges centered around whether they had complied with requirements in state election law that their papers be bound together in some fashion when submitted. The board majority appeared to be convinced that the lack of a stapler or any other fastening device at the city clerk’s office where the papers were turned in and statements from the deputy city clerk that they could turn their un-bound papers in as is, created enough of an issue to justify not applying the binding requirement strictly. ....

An attorney for Yvi Kraus Russell, who’d challenged the candidacy papers of Alderman Eleanor Revelle, 7th Ward, withdrew the objection at a hearing of Evanston’s Electoral Board this morning. The board accepted the withdrawal, wrapping up three days of hearings on a half-dozen disputes involving five candidates seeking to be on next spring’s municipal election ballot.
