Second Fridays coming to Oldsmar

OLDSMAR — For several decades, many Pinellas County communities have hosted a monthly Friday night street festival, starting with St. Pete’s First Friday celebrations in the 1990s and continuing today with similar events in Safety Harbor (Third Friday) and Tarpon Springs (First Friday).
Now you can add Oldsmar to the list of municipalities blocking one Friday off the calendar each month as the Oldsmar City Council recently voted 5-0 in favor of waiving application fees for the Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce’s proposed Second Friday events, scheduled to take place on State Street from 6-10 p.m. on July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10.  ....

Oldsmar tightens up security following water plant hack

OLDSMAR — The city of Oldsmar became world renowned for all the wrong reasons after the North Pinellas community’s water treatment plant suffered a software breach over Super Bowl weekend.
The Feb. 5 hack, which investigators said involved an unknown party accessing the facility’s computer system and altering the chemical composition of the water supply, received international attention and shined a spotlight on the shortcomings of a critical component of the nation’s infrastructure system.
Officials said the breach attempted to raise the level of sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye, in the water supply to dangerous levels. It was spotted by a plant worker, who notified a supervisor who subsequently called the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, leading some to praise the alert employee. ....

Hacker Attempts to Poison Florida City's Water Supply

Feb 10, 2021 4:06 AM PT
A cyber intruder broke into the computer network of the water treatment system of a Florida city and attempted to poison it with lye.
News of the attack was made public Monday by officials of Oldsmar, who revealed the attack was foiled by an operator at the facility within minutes of its launch.
After gaining access to the city s water system through software used by employees for remote network access, the intruder increased the levels of sodium hydroxide in the system from 100 parts per million to 11,000 parts per million.
Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as lye, is the main ingredient in liquid drain cleaners. In the water system, it s used in small amounts to control the acidity of the city s drinking water. ....

Cybersecurity and your water: Hacker attempted to poison Florida city s water supply
An unknown hacker remotely accessed the chemical controls of a water treatment plant in the City of Oldsmar, near Tampa, Fla., earlier this month. This breach is a reminder that the country s water infrastructure is poorly secured in cyberspace - and that vulnerabilities in this critical system pose real world consequences.
Upon gaining access to the system, the hacker increased the amount of sodium hydroxide in the water to dangerous levels. Sodium hydroxide is lye and the main ingredient in drain cleaner. At high levels, it would have poisoned the city s drinking water. The hacker breached the network through TeamViewer software, a commonly used program for remote system maintenance. Industri ....

Water Treatment Hack Prompts Warning From CISA

Get Permission
Following the hacking of a Florida water treatment plant, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is warning the operators of other plants to be on the lookout for hackers who exploit remote access software and outdated operating systems - and to take risk mitigation steps. But the advice applies to other organizations as well, some security experts say.
The investigation into the breach of the water treatment facility in Oldsmar, Florida, continues. Local officials say a hacker gained remote access to a system to increase the amount of lye in the city s water system, but the hack was immediately thwarted. The plant s employees reportedly used TeamViewer for remote access (see: ....
