First of all, let s talk about the variants.
Viruses mutate constantly, so most mutations do nothing, said Wachter. What we re seeing now with the U.K., the Brazilian and the South African variant is interesting, because it shows that variants can change in all sorts of ways. They can make (viruses) more infectious, they can make them more serious meaning equally infectious, but if you happen to get it you re likely to get sicker and/or they can make them resistant to immunity.
Any or all of those things are concerning because they make herd immunity harder to attain. Take the U.K. variant, which is said to be about 50% more infectious than last year s predominant strain. That means you d need to vaccinate more people to really curb its spread. Variants that are resistant to immunity would provide an even bigger challenge and force a real re-tinkering of the vaccine. ....

Gray area in new California vaccine eligibility list could benefit those with underlying health conditions

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) On February 12th, California Health Director Dr. Mark Ghaly announced that people from the ages of 16 to 64 who are severely disabled or have chronic health conditions will be prioritized for future COVID-19 vaccines.
The eligibility expansion only listed those that the state categorized as highest risk, including individuals with cancer, heart conditions, and severe obesity among others.
But if you keep scrolling down the list it also includes individuals who are likely to develop severe life-threatening illness or death from COVID, and California officials advise healthcare providers to use their best clinical judgement.
The announcement left many with underlying health conditions wondering if they too qualified. ....

Question:
AstraZeneca paused its vaccine rollout in South Africa because a study showed it wasn t as effective against a variant. Is that something that might happen here?
Dr. Patel:
It s possible that the variant, the South African variant, that s the B1.35, I believe that s the lineage, could become more widespread in the United States and be less effective. A vaccine would be less effective against it. As of right now I believe there are about six cases in the U.S. That could absolutely spread. Now the early data from South Africa - as you mentioned - that s about 2,000 people. They found the AstraZenica vaccine wasn t really preventing against that South African variant. The other vaccines were preventing against it but to a lesser degree. They were preventing the severe cases in hospitalizations. But, again If we let that variant spread it could push a little bit backwards as we try to race to get people vaccinated. ....
