District making moves on strategic planning process


EAST GREENWICH – There’s still much work to be done, but Superintendent Alexis Meyer feels confident the community can take pride in the strategic planning currently underway.
The strategic planning work – which will clearly define a theory of action, mission and vision for the district going forward – began several months ago in December, with assistance and direction from School Committee Vice Chair Lori McEwen.
To date, four meetings have already taken place, according to Meyer, with another one on the books for May. The district will still be seeking community input, and what is currently on the table is still very much in draft form, but Meyer said plans are moving in the right direction.  ....

Researchers say ramps — AKA wild leeks — are at risk. In Virginia, they're embarking on a ramp rescue.

On a chilly April day, a group treks through the forest at Virginia Tech s Catawba Sustainability Center in search of ramps.
The Catawba Sustainability Center, which is connected to Virginia Tech, is working to create a model for sustainable forest farming of ramps, as demand for the Appalachian plant has grown.
But they aren’t looking to forage the plants, also known as wild leeks. This team from Virginia Tech and the U.S. Forest Service is studying the best production techniques for ramps.
Ramps, which are native to the Appalachian region, have grown increasingly popular, particularly in the culinary world. Experts say the intense interest in ramps, along with their limited window of availability each year, put them at risk of being over-harvested. ....
