George Floyd protests: How cop TV shows taught us to valorize the police

But in 2020, after George Floyd died at the hands of police and wave of protests against police brutality spread across the US, police drove their vans into crowds of protesters, shot paint canisters at people standing on their own porches, fired rubber bullets at reporters and arrested other reporters live on television, and pulled down protesters’ masks to pepper spray them in the face in the midst of a respiratory pandemic.
There is a gap between the ways in which the police behave and the ways in which the public perceives them. And for a long time, police have behaved as though they think pop culture is responsible for that gap. ....

2021 Academy Awards nominations: Sticking their heads in the sand

2021 Academy Awards nominations: Sticking their heads in the sand
The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced Monday morning. The annual ceremony will be held April 25 at two locations, Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Due to the ongoing pandemic, only presenters, nominees and their guests will be allowed to attend the event.
Media coverage has concentrated largely on the greater “diversity” represented by this year’s nominees. As
Variety explained, with an audible sigh of relief, “Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations on Monday, setting an Oscar record for diversity in those categories. … The achievement comes after years of aggressive efforts by the Academy to diversify its membership in the wake of all-white acting nominees for the 2015 and 2016 ceremonies. … This year, thankfully, was quite different.” ....

Ross Douthat: Do liberals care if books disappear?
Flaws in Dr Seuss and Babar are a reason for a diverse canon, not a good reason to make books go away.

Opinion | Do Liberals Care if Books Disappear?

March 6, 2021
From the idealistic liberalism of my high school English teachers, I learned that to try to get rid of offensive literature is the great sin of easily triggered rubes. A special horror at
banning books, which usually meant removing them from the curriculum in some rural school district, pervaded our libraries and classrooms. And a particular shame seemed to throb in my teachers’ breasts when they admitted that some books were even targeted “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” say for misguided
progressive reasons.
This week I learned from a different kind of liberalism that only easily triggered rubes care when offensive books are made to disappear. It was mildly creepy to hear that the custodians of Theodor Geisel’s estate, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, consulted with a “panel of experts” and decided to cease publishing six Seuss titles because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.” But it was much creepier that so ....

The Golden Globes were mostly remote, and yeah, it was kind of a mess

More like Golden Glitches.
Like everything else, the Golden Globes had to reimagine its proceedings Sunday because of the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s certainly no room for ballrooms and red carpets stuffed with celebrity actors, industry hotshots, and ravenous fashion photographers when an airborne virus is milling about. And like everything else college classes, doctor appointments, first dates, improv shows the resulting “coronavirus compromise” came out more than a little awkward. And we’re not even talking about the stiltedattempts at sketches.
At least hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, live on opposite coasts, poked fun at the circumstances early with a split-screen gag during their opening monologue. ....
