Gov. Kay Ivey announced Friday that $16.5 million of bonds issued by the Alabama Public School and College Authority, authorized by the Alabama Legislature to fund capital improvements for the state’s education system, will allow for the construction of the Smart Communities and Innovation Building on the University of Alabama campus.
The name of the building and the scope of the project are subject to the approval of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees.
“We are deeply grateful to Gov. Ivey and our state elected officials for their leadership in boosting the university’s existing expertise and research innovation in the area of transportation, and are truly appreciative for support from the board of trustees and the UA System Office in moving this transformative project forward,” said UA President Stuart R. Bell. “The Smart Communities and Innovation Building will be the only one of its kind in the United ....

A junior at the University of Alabama Huntsville is taking legal action against his University.
Joshua Greer, President of Young Americans for Liberty at UAH, filed a lawsuit because of alleged policies requiring students to get authorization to speak on campus.
The lawsuit filed at the Madison County Courthouse said the policies don t align with Alabama s Campus Free Speech Act. ....

Young Americans for Liberty, the nation’s leading youth libertarian organization, announced a free speech lawsuit against the University of Alabama in Huntsville Thursday aiming to strike down a policy that requires students to obtain speaking permits three days in advance of campus events.
The Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing the school’s YAL chapter in the suit, is alleging that the policy violates Alabama’s Campus Free Speech Act.
Alabama law is clear: Students don’t need a permit from college officials to speak on campus, but that’s exactly what the University of Alabama in Huntsville is doing violating the law and shutting down speech on campus, ADF counsel Michael Ross, who specializes in academic freedom, said in a statement. Two years after the plan was first introduced, the University of Alabama in Huntsville is taking the first steps to develop the Executive Plaza property the school purchased in 2017 in what’s described an ambitious expansion of the campus.
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees last week approved $4.1 million for the school to demolish the abandoned buildings at the 58-acre site across Sparkman Drive from the Bevill Center.
The project’s master plan, in part, envisions a “lively cluster of student-focused retail, food and beverage options that builds the college town experience” as well as more campus housing, offices for UAH as well as the private sector and possibly a multi-use facility that would provide the school with its first campus home for its hockey team.
