13.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.7 bpg, 1.8 tpg, 23.5 mpg, 57.6% FG, 60.2% FTs Pros: Cardoso was Syracuseâs leading rebounder and second-leading scorer last season despite only playing 23.5 minutes per game, fifth-most on the team. She was expected to be Syracuseâs centerpiece next season. Cons: Cardoso attempted 103 free throws last season, more than four per game, but she only connected on 60%. Thatâs not much better than she shoots from the floor, and a higher percentage would punish opponents for fouling her. Cardoso also committed a lot of turnovers given her minutes. Needs to improve: Cardoso didnât foul out of a game last season, but she lived on the edge. Cardoso picked up four fouls on five occasions (basically every five games). Foul trouble was one reason Cardoso didnât log more minutes. Playing on the same team as Aliyah Boston - whether or not they are on the court together - should help both players stay out of foul trouble. ....
Michael J. LeBrecht II/NBAE via Getty Images As the Sky and coach James Wade prepare for the second virtual WNBA Draft, Thursday at 6 p.m. on ESPN, here’s a look back at the team’s first-round selections over the last five years. 2020: No. 8 Ruthy Hebard, Oregon, Forward The Chicago Sky’s most recent draft pick was an instant contributor, and that’s something Wade is looking to emulate in this year’s draft. Hebard came in and despite challenges presented by the 2020 season, averaged 5.7 points and 3.9 rebounds in 22 games. 2019: No. 4 Katie Lou Samuelson, UConn, Guard/Forward In her rookie season with the Sky, Samuelson averaged 2.4 points in 20 games played. Wade traded her to the Dallas Wings for Azura Stevens head of the 2020 season. Stevens came in and before suffering a knee injury, was an asset to the Sky averaging 11.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 13 games. She was a starter for all 13. ....
Photo by Julio Aguilar/Getty Images The Washington Mystics won the WNBA championship in 2019 before losing many key players to opt outs prior to the 2020 bubble season during which they went 9-13 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. They hope to be back to being one of the best teams in the league this year. Picks: none The Washington Mystics do not have any scheduled picks in the 2021 WNBA Draft. Their trade to get Tina Charles prior to the 2020 season made sure of that. Charles is a former MVP and, at 32, is still a superstar in the league. Her addition makes Washington a contender when placed alongside two-time MVP Elena Delle Donne. The team also has All-WNBA Second Team talent Myisha Hines-Allen, sharpshooter Ariel Atkins and an emerging star point guard in Natasha Cloud. That will likely be the Mystics’ starting lineup and they will sorely miss offseason acquisition Alysha Clark who is out for the season with a Lisfranc injury. ....
