Black neighborhoods discussed at meeting

About 50 people gathered for a meeting to keep residents informed about what they demand for their neighborhoods and the changes that have been made where they live.
Hosted by Porters Quarters Community Connection, the meeting on Sunday at Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church, 804 SW Fifth St.,  featured residents from historic Black neighborhoods sharing their concerns about the fate of their neighborhoods.
Pastor Ronald Foxx of Shady Grove opened the meeting with a prayer and a brief history of Porters.
This has been a community church all of my life, Foxx said.
Foxx has been a member of the church for 65 years and the pastor for 11 years. ....

Legal aid project lends small businesses a helping hand


For 10 years in southern India, John Jesubakthan worked for an organization that rescued victims, including children, from slavery, something that still affects around 18 million people in that country.
A year and a half ago, he married Rachel, a U.S. citizen and the couple moved to Orlando.
“One of my passions has been to do something with food and I love cooking south Indian food,” Jesubakthan said. “I always wanted to connect my food business with anti-human trafficking and in the long run I want my business to support kids rescued from slavery…particularly with education.”
Setting up a business is always a challenge, and Jesubakthan is trying to get John’s South Indian Kitchen up and running in a pandemic. ....
