BELLOWS FALLS Only a handful of Bellows Falls residents turned out Monday evening for the annual Village Meeting, which has been stripped of all serious decision making.
Voters a year ago approved switching the vote on the village budget to Australian ballot permanently. Last year, the budget was also voted on by Australian ballot, but that was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The $1.61 million village budget, of which $1.59 million will be raised by taxes, will result in a tax increase of about half a percent 0.60.
The few residents who attended only raised a couple of questions about the village report, which was faulted for lack of financial information and erroneous information in the minutes of last year s meeting.

BELLOWS FALLS â Bellows Falls residents wonât be voting next month on an advisory opinion on whether to allow retail cannabis sales in the village.
Citing a lack of interest and support, Village President Deborah Wright said at Tuesday nightâs Village Board of Trustees meeting that she wouldnât even ask for a formal vote from the board about putting it on the Village Meeting warning.
Wright said she just wanted people to have the chance to weigh in on the issue, which would ultimately be decided by the Rockingham Select Board and a townwide vote. Under state law, communities have to vote to opt in to the state cannabis system.

BELLOWS FALLS â Rockingham and Bellows Falls turned their collective eyes Tuesday night to Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., with hopes of securing an $11 million federal budget earmark to pay for the repairs for the closed Vilas Bridge.
The Rockingham Select Board and the Bellows Falls Village Board of Trustees, meeting in joint session, each approved separate resolutions to Welch, formally requesting the earmark, or âcommunity projectâ as they are being called. The deadline for such requests is in early April.
The town and village are hoping that the renewed federal funding program, and the emphasis by the new Biden administration on repairing the nationâs infrastructure, means that there will finally be some action on the bridge, which was closed by the state of New Hampshire 12 years ago because of the bridgeâs deteriorating condition.

Panel allows Winfield trustee candidate to stay on the ballot
Updated 1/14/2021 8:21 PM
Winfield Trustee Marianne Bruss will remain on the April ballot after the village s electoral board dismissed an objection to her nominating petitions.
The electoral board on Wednesday refused to consider the objection that Winfield resident Jenell Ziberna filed against Bruss.
Instead, the panel featuring Village President Erik Spande, Trustee Dennis Hogan and public member William Worobec decided that Ziberna s objection documents were invalid because they were missing required information. For example, Ziberna s objection didn t include her address and status as a registered voter.
Hogan said he couldn t act on the objection because it was missing crucial information.
