OUR VIEW: Let voters decide on water funding

McAlester city councilors should let voters decide on a $32.5 million bond for water infrastructure.
An item on Tuesdayâs meeting agenda called for discussion and possible action to call a special election to allow the McAlester Public Works Authority to go into debt to address the cityâs water infrastructure needs.
Councilors pulled the item after the cityâs financial advisor was unable to attend the meeting â so the item moved to the May 11 meeting.
When it comes up again, council members will consider a resolution calling for a special election on July 13 for McAlester voters to decide if they want to allow the MPWA to go into debt for $32.5 million to address water infrastructure issues. ....

City councilors pulled discussion of a special election to allow the McAlester Public Works Authority to go into debt to address issues relating to the city s water infrastructure needs â moving the agenda item to the May 11 meeting.
The resolution calls for voters to approve allowing the MPWA to go into debt for $32.5 million to address issues related to water infrastructure in the city of McAlester, with a special election set forÂ July 13, 2021.
McAlester s City Charter requires a vote of the people to approve any expenditures by a municipal beneficiary trust costing in excess of $1 million. The MPWA is operated by members of the McAlester City Council. ....

ERWIN - Carolyn E. Cash, age 77, Erwin, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2021 at the Unicoi County Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Erwin and the daughter of the late Franklin and Catherine Bartley Cash.
Carolyn retired from NN Ball and Roller after many years of service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She loved animals and bowling. When she was younger, she enjoyed traveling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Leroy Cash.
Carolyn leaves behind to cherish her memory, one nephew, Thomas R. Cash and wife, Jessi; two great nephews: Morgan and Bailey; her best friend, Sue Collins. ....

ERWIN - Dr. J. Roger Kiser, Sr., age 85, of Erwin, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at his residence. Born in Jenkins, KY and raised in Wise, VA, Dr. Kiser is a son of the late John and June Nowlin Kiser. Dr. Kiser is of the Baptist faith. Dr. Kiser practiced Dentistry for 59 years; 28 years of that in Emporia, VA, in the eastern part of the state. Followed then by several positions, mainly in Southwest VA, as a Dentist for the state of VA. He finally got to come home from 1995 to 2006. Dr. Kiser taught and supervised in the Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist programs at Wytheville Community College in Wytheville, VA. He served on the Licensing Board for the state of VA Dental Hygienist program and is a past President of the Virginia Dental Association, as well as the state Lionâs Club. Dr. Kiser is a double fellow in the American Dental Association, holding one fellowship for Recognition of Excellence in Private Practice and the other for Contribution in the Field o ....
