Candidates seek council seats in McAlester, Hartshorne

A race is shaping up for the vacant Ward 4 seat on the McAlester City Council during the first day of a candidate filing period for vacant city council posts in McAlester and Hartshorne.
Two candidates filed Monday for the vacant Ward 4 seat on the McAlester City Council. Randy Roden, 507 W. Stonewall Ave., and Lance Yeley, 218 W. Jackson Ave., are candidates for an unexpired term in the Ward 4 seat. The seat became vacant following the death of then-Ward 4 city councilor  and McAlester vice mayor James Brown in February 2021.
Two candidates have also filed for vacant city council seats in Hartshorne, but in different wards. ....

Section 2.06 of the McAlester City Charter provides information regarding vacancies, forfeiture of office and filling vacancies on the McAlester City Council.
1. In what ways can a seat on the McAlester City Council become vacant?
The office of a Council member shall become vacant upon the member s death, resignation, removal from office, or forfeiture of office in any manner authorized by this Charter or the laws of the state of Oklahoma.
2. When must an office be forfeited?
A Council member shall forfeit that office if the Council member: lacks at any time during the term of office for which elected any qualification for the office prescribed by this Charter or by the laws of the State of Oklahoma. ....

City councilors pulled discussion of a special election to allow the McAlester Public Works Authority to go into debt to address issues relating to the city s water infrastructure needs — moving the agenda item to the May 11 meeting.
The resolution calls for voters to approve allowing the MPWA to go into debt for $32.5 million to address issues related to water infrastructure in the city of McAlester, with a special election set for July 13, 2021.
McAlester s City Charter requires a vote of the people to approve any expenditures by a municipal beneficiary trust costing in excess of $1 million. The MPWA is operated by members of the McAlester City Council. ....
