Grieving relatives say St Basil's memorial service to honour their departed loved ones is in poor taste

7 July 2021 1:28pm
Relatives of residents who died when COVID-19 swept through St Basil’s aged care nursing home in Fawkner have said they are outraged by the facility’s decision to hold a memorial service for the deceased.
Fr Evmenios Vasilopoulos, the Archdiocesan Vicar of the Northcote district, who is the current Chairman of the nursing home following the resignation of Konstantinos Kontis in September 2020, told
Neos Kosmos that he understands the suffering of the relatives. “I totally understand the pain and reaction of Greek Australians who lost their beloved people,” he said.
He added, however, that it is the “duty” of the home to hold the memorial service. “They were members of our family and we mourned and still mourn their loss,” he said. ....

Empty streets: Victoria's Lockdown is another slap to business

Victoria began the first day of its seven-day lockdown on Friday – the fourth time that Melbourne had been shut down since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020.
The day was cold and cloudy, with ominously empty streets as people could only leave their homes for five reasons: food and supplies; authorised work; care and caregiving; exercise for a two-hour maximum; and to get vaccinated.
Following an anti-lockdown demonstration at Flinders St Station on Thursday night, Melbourne’s morning was obedient – empty – and it was not business as usual. The effects of lockdown were not unusual for the city of Melbourne, but this time, shops were shut without any form of JobKeeper assistance – and the 5km travel radius further accentuated problems. ....

Love conquers lockdown: Brides and grooms whose passion was greater than the pandemic

28 May 2021 4:55pm
The bitterness of Melbourne’s fourth lockdown which kicked off at 11.59pm on Thursday has been a hard pill to swallow, especially for those who had to cancel plans.
Those feeling it the hardest are brides and grooms who had planned to get married this weekend – especially those who had cancelled their plans last year as the pandemic raged.
Some of these brides and grooms scrambled to tie the knot ahead of the latest ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown, with Fr Evmenios Vasilopoulos, the Archdiocesan Vicar of Northcote telling
Neos Kosmos that the winter season is not usually chosen for weddings, however some of those which were set to take place on the weekend were rushed for Thursday ahead of lockdown. ....

A fourth lockdown in Victoria, and Greek Australian stakeholders feel the affect

27 May 2021 12:49pm
Public health experts have been concerned on the speed of the B1.617.1 variant of COVID-19 which has moved quickly through the community.
Acting Premier James Merlino said, “here in Victoria we’re seeing not only how quick it is but how contagious it is as well”.
“Our contact tracers identifying – are identifying and locking down the first ring, second ring and third ring within 24 hours,” he said.
“They have never done that before. That’s the fastest our contact tracers have ever moved within a 24-hour period, identifying and locking down first, second and third rings of cases. But despite working as fast as this – and my thanks to all of our contact tracers – this variant is moving faster still.” ....
